God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance

The Lord sends a [a]message against Jacob,
And it falls on Israel.
And all the people know it,
That is, (A)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
Asserting in pride and in (B)arrogance of heart:
10 “The bricks have fallen down,
But we will (C)rebuild with smooth stones;
The sycamores have been cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
11 Therefore the Lord raises superior adversaries against them from (D)Rezin
And provokes their enemies,
12 The Arameans from the east and the (E)Philistines from the west;
And they (F)devour Israel with [b]gaping jaws.
(G)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

13 Yet the people (H)do not turn back to Him who struck them,
Nor do they (I)seek the Lord of armies.
14 So the Lord cuts off (J)head and tail from Israel,
Both palm branch and bulrush (K)in a single day.
15 The head is (L)the elder and esteemed man,
And the prophet who teaches (M)falsehood is the tail.
16 (N)For those who guide this people are leading them astray;
And those who are guided by them are [c]confused.
17 Therefore the Lord does (O)not rejoice over their young men,
(P)Nor does He have compassion on their [d]orphans or their widows;
For every one of them is (Q)godless and an (R)evildoer,
And every (S)mouth is speaking foolishness.
(T)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

18 (U)For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns;
It also sets the thickets of the forest aflame
And they roll upward in a column of smoke.
19 By the (V)wrath of the Lord of armies the (W)land is burned,
And the (X)people are like fuel for the fire;
No (Y)one spares his brother.
20 [e]They devour what is on the right hand but are still (Z)hungry,
And [f]they eat what is on the left hand, but they are not satisfied;
Each of them eats the (AA)flesh of his own arm.
21 Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
(AB)And together they are against Judah.
(AC)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

Assyria Is God’s Instrument

10 Woe to those who (AD)enact unjust statutes
And to those who constantly record [g]harmful decisions,
So as (AE)to [h]deprive the needy of justice
And rob the poor among My people of their rights,
So (AF)that widows may be their spoil
And that they may plunder the [i]orphans.
Now (AG)what will you do in the (AH)day of punishment,
And in the devastation which will come (AI)from afar?
(AJ)To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your wealth?
Nothing remains but to crouch [j]among the (AK)captives
Or fall [k]among those (AL)killed.
(AM)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

The Paralyzed Man Healed

When Jesus came back to Capernaum a few days later, it was heard that He was at home. And (A)many were gathered together, so that there was no longer space, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. (B)And some people *came, bringing to Him a man who was (C)paralyzed, carried by four men. And when they were unable to [a]get to Him because of the crowd, they (D)removed the roof [b]above Him; and after digging an opening, they let down the pallet on which the (E)paralyzed man was lying. And Jesus, seeing their faith, *said to the paralyzed man, “Son, (F)your sins are forgiven.” But some of the scribes were sitting there and thinking it over in their hearts, “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming! (G)Who can forgive sins except God alone?” Immediately Jesus, aware [c]in His spirit that they were thinking that way within themselves, *said to them, “Why are you thinking about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the (H)paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? 10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He *said to the paralyzed man, 11 “I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet, and go home.” 12 And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and (I)were glorifying God, saying, “(J)We have never seen anything like this!”

13 And He went out again by the seashore; and (K)all the [d]people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.

Levi (Matthew) Called

14 (L)As He passed by, He saw [e](M)Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax office, and He *said to him, (N)Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

15 And it *happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and [f]sinners were [g]dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. 16 When (O)the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the [h]sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “(P)Why is He eating with tax collectors and [i]sinners?” 17 And hearing this, Jesus *said to them, (Q)It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

18 (R)John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they *came and *said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “While the groom is with them, [j]the attendants of the groom cannot fast, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast. 20 But the (S)days will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they will fast, on that day.

21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, [k]the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

Woe to (A)Assyria, the (B)rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hands is (C)My indignation,
I send it against a (D)godless nation
And commission it against the (E)people of My fury
To capture spoils and (F)to seize plunder,
And to [a]trample them down like (G)mud in the streets.
Yet it (H)does not so intend,
Nor does [b]it plan so in its heart,
But rather it is [c]its purpose to destroy
And to eliminate [d]many nations.
For it says, “Are not my officers [e]all kings?
Is not (I)Calno like (J)Carchemish,
Or (K)Hamath like Arpad,
Or (L)Samaria like (M)Damascus?
10 As my hand has reached to the (N)kingdoms of the idols,
Whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 Shall I not do the same to Jerusalem and her images
Just as I have done to Samaria and (O)her idols?”

12 So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His (P)work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will [f]punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and (Q)the arrogant pride of his eyes.” 13 For (R)he has said,

“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,
Because I have understanding;
And I (S)removed the boundaries of the peoples
And plundered their treasures,
And like a powerful man I brought down [g]their inhabitants,
14 And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a (T)nest,
And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth;
And there was not one that flapped its wing, opened its beak, or chirped.”

15 Is the (U)axe to (V)boast itself over the one who chops with it?
Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it?
That would be like (W)a [h]club wielding those who lift it,
Or like (X)a rod lifting the one who is not wood.
16 Therefore the Lord, the [i]God of armies, will send a (Y)wasting disease among his (Z)stout warriors;
And under his (AA)glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.
17 And the (AB)Light of Israel will become a fire and [j]Israel’s (AC)Holy One a flame,
And it will (AD)burn and devour [k]his thorns and his briars in a single day.
18 And He will (AE)destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick person wastes away.
19 And the (AF)rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down.

A Remnant Will Return

20 Now on that day the (AG)remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob (AH)who have escaped, will no longer rely on the one who struck them, but will truly (AI)rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

21 A (AJ)remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the (AK)mighty God.
22 For (AL)though your people, Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A (AM)destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

23 For a complete destruction, one that is determined, (AN)the Lord [l]God of armies will execute in the midst of the whole land.

The Seventh Seal: Trumpets

When the Lamb broke the (A)seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. And I saw (B)the seven angels who stand before God, and seven (C)trumpets were given to them.

(D)Another angel came and stood at the (E)altar, holding a (F)golden censer; and much (G)incense was given to him, so that he might [a]add it to the (H)prayers of all the [b]saints on the (I)golden altar which was before the throne. And (J)the smoke of the incense ascended from the angel’s hand with the prayers of the [c]saints before God. Then the angel [d]took the [e]censer and (K)filled it with the fire of the altar, and (L)hurled it to the earth; and there were (M)peals of thunder and sounds, and flashes of lightning and an (N)earthquake.

(O)And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them.

The first sounded, and there was (P)hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and (Q)a third of the earth was burned up, and (R)a third of the (S)trees were burned up, and all the green (T)grass was burned up.

The second angel sounded, and something like a great (U)mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and (V)a third of the (W)sea became blood, and (X)a third of the creatures which were in the sea [f]and had life, died; and a third of the (Y)ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded, and a great star (Z)fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a (AA)third of the rivers and on the (AB)springs of waters. 11 The star is named Wormwood; and a (AC)third of the waters became (AD)wormwood, and many people died from the waters because they were made bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded, and a (AE)third of the (AF)sun, a third of the (AG)moon, and a (AH)third of the (AI)stars were struck, so that a (AJ)third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a (AK)third of it, and the night in the same way.

13 Then I looked, and I heard [g]an eagle flying in (AL)midheaven, saying with a loud voice, “(AM)Woe, woe, woe to (AN)those who live on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the (AO)three angels who are about to sound!”
